Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! I know what you may be thinking: 'oh god, not another person who wants to become a blogger'. Don't worry, I have no illusions in that department. I'm not looking to get scouted by the Guardian and I'm not planning to sneak a living off of letting you all know I had beans on toast for breakfast this morning and that my legs ache.

If you've gotten this far on my site, I'm sure you've learned that last year I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was immensely lucky to survive. When I came out of hospital I felt like I had been given a second chance at life, and I found myself thinking about all those who went through the same as me but weren't as lucky. As a result, since this I have wanted to do something to try and raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young and do what I can to support their incredible work.

So how about a sponsored marathon? Maybe complete the Three Peaks challenge? Eventually I fell upon the only logical solution: taking on a 3000km trek from one end of New Zealand to the other despite never having done a significant multi-day hike before... because I have far too much free time.

This blog is one way I hope to document my progress of the trek. If I'm doing this for charity, it's no good saying I've started then 4 months later saying "all done, donations pretty please". I want you to join me and follow me as I slowly but surely trudge my way to the finish line that is the cherry on top of the almost never-ending cake.

  • A cup of seemingly endless tarmac roads that make me want to gouge my eyes out

  • A serving of beautiful landscapes that put the Peak District to shame

  • A tablespoon of getting lost for hours and thinking "sod this"

  • A teaspoon of mice breaking into my tent at night to steal the cheese from my backpack

  • A bucket-full of horrendous weather that makes me think "ahh, now this is more like home"

  • And a healthy sprinkling of good old fashioned British complaining just to top it all off

I want to show you every slice of the journey with no intention of glamourising every step. The good, the bad and the doing-my-head-in. Every step brings me closer to completing something great for a charity very close to my heart (pun intended).

I'm very new to this blogging stuff so don't expect Shakespeare. Nevertheless, I'll do my utmost to keep it as entertaining as possible. I'm sure I will be completing a few big multi-day hikes before I head off to New Zealand as training which I will also document, so hopefully I will be able to get a bit of practise in and maybe even push my writing up to a solid Key-Stage 2 level.

So, make sure to follow me on my journey; keep up with this blog, follow my socials for regular videos and posts, and maybe even leave a donation if I'm nearing the end and you think I've earned a couple quid for this incredible cause.

See you at the finish line!
